The campaign for the legislative elections on May 18 in Portugal began last Sunday with the announcement by the acting Prime Minister, the conservative Luís Montenegro, regarding the notification of nearly 18,000 irregular immigrants to leave the country soon.
Montenegro stated that the notified immigrants will have the opportunity to appeal the expulsion decision once they receive the notification. In his words: "After being notified, they now have the possibility to appeal the decided rejection and, if there is any mistake [...]".
The immigration issue has become a controversial topic at the start of the electoral campaign in Portugal. The Portuguese Minister of the Presidency, António, has been involved in the controversy surrounding this immigration issue.
The legislative elections to be held on May 18 will be marked by this government announcement and by the controversy generated around the expulsion of irregular immigrants.
