News that footballer Ángel Di María, playing for the Portuguese club "Benfica", refused a major offer from one of the clubs in the Saudi Professional League after winning alongside the Argentina national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, before making the decision to return to "Benfica."
Di María stated in an interview for the new resource "Infobae": "I received many offers with numbers that I have never seen on paper in my life. After discussing it with my family, we said: 'No, we will go to Lisbon, we want to return to "Benfica."'
He added: "I actually received an offer from Saudi Arabia. I have no agent; managing my affairs helps a friend who is my friend. They sent me an offer, but I declined, then it came again, already in total twice as much, from the same club."
"I repeatedly declined, but a friend told me that I need to inform them of something, because they do not know that I do not want to play there. So I said: 'If you pay this amount, we can go,' but they agreed!"
Before the new offer, Di María consulted with his family; however, in the end, he decided to return to Lisbon so that he could again take the field in the "Benfica" jersey for the second time after the first period from 2007 to 2010.
The former international footballer also expressed his immense love for the "Benfica" fans, the place where he feels at home.
On his decision to end his international career with the national team "Albiceleste", Di María said it was necessary to give young players a chance to gain experience and build a connection ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Di María was one of the key players for the Argentina national team and helped them win the World Cup in Qatar three years ago, as well as the America Cups in 2021 and 2024.
