Martín Anselmi resigned from his position as Technical Director of Cruz Azul after the start of the Clausura 2025 tournament in Liga MX to join Porto FC. After being eliminated by Roma in the 2025 Europa League, Anselmi ended his time at the Mexican club. He arrived in Mexico to lead the cement makers in the Clausura 2024, a tournament in which they were runners-up. After a year with the team, Anselmi left for Portugal to coach Porto in the middle of the 2024-2025 season.

In the 2025 Europa League match between Porto and Roma, Samu Omorodion scored a spectacular bicycle kick goal in the 27th minute, but Roma managed to turn the score around with a brace from Paulo Dybala. Despite the goal from Anselmi's team in the 90+6 minute, they could not come back and lost 4-3 on aggregate, being eliminated from the tournament.

Porto's elimination from the Europa League generated memes on social media. Martín Anselmi had arrived at Cruz Azul in December 2023 and in the Clausura 2024 led the team to the Liguilla, where they finished as runners-up. In the Apertura 2024, the club positioned itself as super leader, but in the semifinals of Liga MX they fell again against América, marking Anselmi's farewell.

Anselmi's last match with Cruz Azul was against Puebla in Matchday 3 of the Clausura 2025. Despite having a contract until 2027, the Argentine coach decided to leave the team to join Porto FC, which is currently competing in the Europa League.
