President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced on Thursday that Portugal will hold early parliamentary elections on May 18. During a televised address, he stated: "After consultations, I came to the conclusion that this is the right moment for holding early elections." According to the Portuguese Constitution, the president has the right to dissolve parliament and call for early elections if none of the parties has an absolute majority after parliamentary elections.
